| TROPHEUS CARE TIPS |
INTRODUCTION
The Tropheus species originate from the longest of the Rift Valley
lakes. Lake Tanganyika in south central Africa. These fish inhabit
the rocky regions of this lake from 3 – 30 meters in depth.
Some young adults species can be seen in large schools grazing the
rocks for algae with adult males defending a territory of up to
2 meters (in the wild). Females are a bit less territorial and can
be observed foraging in groups, however adult Tropheus typically
do not live in groups or schools. Tropheus are territorial and can
be rough on others of their own species with males being intolerant
of other males.
DIET
Tropheus are herbivores with very long specialized digestive tracts
and in the wild spend much of their time grazing algae from the
rocky areas that they inhabit. HBH Graze flake is a high veggie
diet made up of components such as spirulina, spinach, zucchini
and alfalfa. With 38% greens this is a perfect staple diet for
Tropheus.
ENCLOSURE
Tropheus require a spacious aquarium, as they are quite territorial.
The aquarium should consist of rocky structures stacked (and secured)
up to the waters surface with numerous hiding places. Allow open
space for them to swim freely in while using strong light to encourage
algae growth that they can eat to supplement their diet.
